Our Flying Kite
Our group made a kite that represents Afghanistan and The Kite Runner in many ways. We made it a quadrilateral because we felt that it was the best way to represent the four parts of the kite that we have, and it also represents the Afghanistan people being classifed by social class, such as the Hazaras and Pashtuns.
The black in our kite represents the Taliban taking over Afghanistan and how it was terrible for the people in Afghanistan during this time. Red represents the blood shed by the soliders during the war, and green represents prosperity and agruculture. The bamboo for the frame represents how the Afghanistan people lived. They didn't have many materials to make it out of, so we chose bamboo.
We decided to pick these words for our kite because we feel that these words are the words that symbolizes The Kite Runner the best. These words to us basically gives a summary of the story and how the story goes. It gives the conflict as well as positive events that happened.
The process making the kite was fun. We got to experience making our very first kite, because both of us has never made a kite before. Clayton collected the bamboo for the frame, Alex cut out the different colored paper, Tania chose the theme, symbol, character and turning point for the kite, and all of us helped to paint and assemble the kite together.
I (Clayton) feel that my group's kite was good. I liked how we made it out of bamboo because it is unique and different from the others. We used raw materials and I liked that it has a natural touch to it. My group also added lots of details, such as the comparison between Oliver Queen and Amir. We compared the main character from The Kite Runner with my favorite TV show character and added a photo of both characters as well.
I (Tania) really liked my group's kite. I liked how we added an image to each catagory to give the audience a better understanding. I feel that pictures help explain words better. I also liked that we used the Afghanistan flag colors to symbolize that the story took place there. My group made the tree the largest picture there because it symbolizes the friendship of Amir and Hassan and we believe that the main purpose of the story was to show how friendship is important and how it can turn your whole life around if you don't have a good friendship.
Overall, we liked our kite a lot and we believe that it was a good way to show the character, theme, symbols, and turning points of The Kite Runner. Making the kite was a lot of fun and we hope we have fun activities like these in the future.
